Weekend Stack of Maps 5: HEAT DOME 🔥
I spoke too soon last week. The time of reckoning is here for the Pacific Northwest thinking we're insulated from the effects of an increasingly warming west coast.
On Sunday the 27th, it’s supposed tor each nearly 112 degrees in Portland. Unless something changes between now and Sunday (I’m writing this on Wednesday the 23rd by the way) it’s going to absolutely demolish our previous temperature record. Woof.
Here’s some maps to help you cope!
Heat Dome
Just in case you needed proof. Also completely nuts that it’s going to be cooler in Boise than in Portland or Seattle.
No The OTHER One
This is fresh from XKCD and I absolutely love it when he creates new maps. I thought this was particularly funny given that I live in Portland, OR named for Portland, ME, which I’m 100% sure was named for another Portland in England or something.
Avocados
Ever curious where that avo is from? I stumbled upon this map I made a couple years ago. From what I’ve been told, Florida avos are not that good and very stringy.
Texas High Speed Rail
Speaking of rail transportation (you did read my Map Chat on Thursday right?), did you know that Texas is going to have its very own high speed rail line sometime soon-ish?
Backwards Maps
I saw this on Reddit earlier this week. While I don’t much care about the data, I love looking at maps in ways we’re not accustom to.

If you’re in the PNW this weekend, please try to stay cool and drink plenty of water. Otherwise, enjoy your weekend!
